One year ago today, I started training with Dawn Alison.
Now, I must say that training with her was definitely not what I expected.
I thought I had hired a personal trainer
to help me prepare for a bodybuilding show and that’s it.
I didn’t think that I had found a coach and friend that was there to educate me,
encourage me, and at times, act as my therapist.
I guess that not having your expectations met can act in your favour.
Over the past year, I’ve had the courage to walk/prance/dance around in a teeny tiny bikini
at two bodybuilding shows,
discovered that I have amazing willpower and determination (never knew I had that!),
and learned how to be comfortable in my own skin.
None of this has anything to do with lifting weights.
Dawn isn’t the type of coach that ever told me I could do it.
She always told me I could do more and do better.
Because of her, I never have the feeling that there’s something I can’t do.
I can do it. Of course I can!
And, if for some reason I think that I can’t,
I’m sure Dawn has a million reasons that I can.
Heck, look at everything she does all while working the hardest job in the world, raising a son!
So, if you’re looking for a personal trainer, they’re a dime a dozen.
Go find someone to tell you what weights to lift and what food to eat.
But, if you’re looking for someone to be by your side,
kick you in the butt if you need it, give you a hug if you need it,
teach you to manage your money,
send you an encouraging text message
that makes you tear up while you’re doing cardio early in the morning preparing for a show,
or remind you what’s important in life,
look for Dawn.
Don’t worry; she’s easy to find in a crowd.
Just open your eyes and open your ears.

INSANITY: doing the same things over and over again expectly different results

after show its easy to get caught up on the sugar high
and you go into denial about how many calories you are consuming
and within a few wks
you can look worse than you did before you started your journey many months prior to your show
it’s a vicious ferris wheel you can get yourself trapped on and can’t get off
it can last weeks, even months, even years
don’t let yourself fall in this PIT
get back to eating a healthy balanced meal plan
stay hooked in with your coach and support network
be aware of where your weight is so things don’t get out of hand
reach out for help if you need it

In the spring of 2012, my youngest daughter was 7 months old. I had found myself in a major “mommy-rut.” All my time and attention was focused on my family and I was feeling overwhelmed by raising two young girls away from any family or support system (we had just moved to Langley from Edmonton a year prior). I wanted and needed a goal that would help me feel a bit more like me again. I had this crazy idea that I wanted to compete. In fact, I had wanted to compete for years but always found an excuse. I had no idea how to get myself there.

I did some research and found Dawn Alison online. I watched (i.e. became slightly obsessed with) her Team Fitbody videos and knew she was the right trainer for me. I started working with her in May of 2012. She immediately put me on a program suited to my goals (not a one-size-fits-all approach), and I quickly began seeing results. We began a 16 week competition prep in July. Those 16 weeks were a complete whirlwind. It was amazing watching Dawn manipulate my diet to get the results she was after. I felt like my own little science experiment. She also helped to arrange and manage every little detail from suit fittings to competition hair and makeup to carb-restricted client meltdowns!

I could not have gotten on the Sandra Wickham Fall Classic stage without her. My competition day experience was the best. I had so much fun and it was great to hear Dawn hooting and hollering from the audience.

As for my goal of feeling a bit more like me again? This was MUCH better and MUCH more than that.

Prior to this, I feel like I had fallen into living a life of submission and just letting things happen around me. I never used to be that way. Through this process, I regained discipline and control in my life. I am viewing the world with fewer limits and more possibilities. Best of all, I have re-established confidence in my ability to take on any challenge life throws at me and see it through to the end. This journey has been about so much more than a physical transformation. The physical transformation was great, but it is almost a secondary benefit to the mental transformation.

Dawn is an extraordinary coach. She is incredibly responsive and has the unique ability to tune into what her clients need. She can motivate you, calm you, or kick your butt depending on what you need! The care and attention she gives to each client truly is incredible. Put your trust in her and she will get you where you want to go. I cannot recommend her highly enough.
